Homemade Flour Tortillas

Makes 8-10 tortillas, depending on size

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • ⅓ cup butter, lard, or oil (canola or avocado oil work well)

  • 1 cup water

    Instructions:

  • Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well. Add your choice of butter, lard, or oil, and work it into the flour mixture until crumbly. Gradually add the water, mixing until a dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.

  • Knead the Dough: Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth.

  • Shape and Rest: Divide the dough into small balls, roughly the size of a golf ball or bigger, depending on your preferred tortilla size. Place the dough balls on a tray or plate, cover them with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let them rest for 30 minutes.

  • Roll the Tortillas: Generously flour a clean surface and roll out each dough ball. Using a rolling pin, roll in one direction (back and forth) no more than 3 times, then flip and rotate the dough 90 degrees. You can also skip flipping and roll until you get a round shape. Repeat the rolling process until the tortilla is thin and as round as possible.

  • Cook the Tortillas: Heat a skillet or comal over medium-high heat. You want to make sure the comal is thoroughly heated before you add the tortilla. Place the rolled-out tortilla on the hot surface. When large bubbles start to rise, flip the tortilla. Continue cooking until both sides are lightly browned with spots, or remove sooner if you prefer less browning. Serve: Enjoy warm, fresh tortillas with your favorite toppings or dishes!
